You do not strictly need a guide. The 16 trails are color-coded and marked. However, a guide is highly recommended. They know where the proboscis monkeys hide and arrange your boat transfers.
Foreign adults pay MYR 20 and foreign children pay MYR 7. Malaysian adults pay MYR 10 and Malaysian children pay MYR 3. You must also pay roughly MYR 40 for the mandatory return boat transfer.
The shared longboat from Kampung Bako Jetty costs MYR 40 for a return ticket. You must pay in cash at the jetty before boarding. Boats leave when they fill up with 6 to 10 people.

We booked with AJ Borneo and had them do the transfers, arrange the hotel, tours to Damai beach and Bako National Park. It was seamless. On time, safe and courteous drivers, clean cars, nice accommodations, with excellent and knowledgeable tour guides. I would highly recommend letting them handle details while you enjoy your time in Kuching. I would definitely use them again.
Honestly, we used AJ Borneo for 2 trips - wetlands and bako and the best time with our guides Anastasia and PE. They really know how to look after their guests and made both trips so personal towards our needs with our children. If you're considering a trip whilst in Kuching then please go ahead and use these guys, you will not be disappointed. Thanks again for a wonderful 2 days
Very good tour! Dorritta was very helpful pointing out the wildlife. We saw a bunch of silver tail monkeys and their babies. We also saw Borneo wild boar and her babies, and a couple of green vipers. The driver, Mac, was a very good and safe driver. He came along with us and took a bunch of pictures of us, which we appreciated. We enjoyed the boat ride to and from the state park and the lunch was delicious.
